Landry & Bartling (2011) Flashcards
Explain the Working Memory Model with reference to one study.
Aim
To investigate if articulatory suppression would influence the the recall of a written list of phonologically dissimilar letters.
Procedure, Design
The researchers used an independent samples design. In the experimental group, participants first saw a list of phonologically dissimilar letters that they had to recall while saying the numbers “1” and “2” at a rate of 2 numbers per second (this was the articulatory suppression task. In the control group, it was the same but without the articulatory suppression task.
Participants were shown 10 lists, each list one at a time for 5 seconds, then they had to wait for another 5 seconds, and then they would try to recall the order of the letters in the list as accurately as possible on an answer sheet.
Results and Explanation of why it supports WMM
The mean percent of accurate recall in the control group was 76% compared to a mean of 45% in the experimental group. It is in line with WMM because it demonstrates that articulatory suppression is preventing rehearsal in the phonological loop due to overload of the component. This resulted in difficulty in memorizing the the letters for the experimental group whereas the control group did not face such difficulty due to no overload.
What type of procedure is it called when participants are asked to carry out two tasks simultaneously?
Dual-task technique
