Landing Gear Flashcards
What are you doing (mechanically speaking) when pulling the gear t handle?
Mechanically releasing the gear up lock cylinder.
How is the landing gear held in the up position?
Mechanically by the uplock cylinder.
How is the gear held down. How do you know it’s down?
A spring loaded slider ring finds a slot at the fully extended position and slides into place. A second ring moves hydraulically to lock it in place. This ring triggers a microswitch for down and locked.
Is there any protection against retracting the gear on the ground?
Yes. A spring loaded plunger locks the handle.
Is landing distance affected by landing in emer power?
Yes, antiskid and power braking are unavailable. Distance increases by 1.33 percent.
What causes the red unlocked lights to go out on retraction?
Microswitches in uplock cylinder must be satisfied.
What are the turn limits for towing?
60* in fly and 95* in tow.
“The runway is pretty slick so I am going to land with my feet applying brake pressure before touchdown….is that cool?”
In theory this is ok due to touchdown protection. Braking will not be in effect until 3 seconds after touchdown, but if i can’t wait three seconds to apply brakes…I’m landing somewhere else.
You landed at a sort field and really got on the brakes. Set the parking brake, went to lunch and came back to two flat tires, what happened?
The heat from the brake pads transfered to the tire’s fusible plug and melted it. Don’t set the parking brake after hard braking.
Is it necessary to cycle the parking brake when reapplying pressure?
No, there is a one way valve for this reason.
Antiskid is unavailable using nitrogen…so I should pump the emer brake handle right?
No, this wastes nitrogen. Smooth pressure should be applied there will be no anti-skid.
What if i combine hydraulic and air pressure by using them both in emer braking situation?
You will let air in the hydraulic lines and possibly blow the resevoir. Feet off the brakes when using nitrogen.
What are the three situations you would get a “landing gear” aural warning. Which one can not be silenced?
Either throttle below 85% with gear up, flaps greater than 15* with gear up or airspeed below 130kts with gear up. Flaps beyond 15* can not be silenced.
