Landing Gear Flashcards
What is the advantage of a nose gear over a tail wheel?
good ground visibility over the nose
What does the metering pin in the shock strut do?
controls the rate of flow of fluid via its variable shape as it passes through the orifice
What type of stabilisation does side and drag struts have? (2)
Side Strut - Lateral stabilisation
Drag Strut - Longitudinal stabilisation
What does the torque link do?
keep the wheel aligned and take the torsional load from ground resistance
What is the advantage of nitrogen gas in tyres as compared to compressed air?
maintains its properties better, is less susceptible to temperature changes, and is drier
When does hydroplaning occur?
a layer of water builds between the tyres and the ground surface, leading to a loss of control.
The Anti-Skid System involves: (3)
- Wheel-speed-sensor-transducers sense speed change
- The control-box circuitry will work on the speed-change information
- Servo valves will meter the appropriate brake pressure to prevent the stoppage of wheel rotation
What is the purpose of thermal fuse plugs?
prevent explosions during hot brakes
Alternative methods for landing gear extension include: (4)
- Pneumatic extension of LG
- Mechanical crank or ratchet system
- Mechanical release of Up Locks
- Separate hydraulic system power
What is the purpose of an arrestor hook?
used to stop the A/C when brakes fail
What is Barricades/Arrestor Nets are used for?
used as a last resort when all other stopping methods fail
What happens when tubeless tyre puncture?
an integrated tube which will retain pressure during puncture
