Describe Barrier Islands
A
- Barrier islands are long, narrow, offshore deposits of sand or sediment that run parallel to the coastline. Before they are stabilised by sand dunes they are called barrier beaches.
- They are separated from the main land by a shallow channel, bay, or lagoon and are often found in chains along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico.
- They are separated from other barrier islands by narrow tidal inlets
