Coastal Processes Flashcards
Define Marine Process
The wearing away of the coastal landscape by the sea
What is a type of marine process?
Erosion (including hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, cavitation, wave quarrying, solution)
Define Sub-Aerial Process
The gradual breakdown of the coastal landscape
Types of Sub-Aerial Process
- Weathering
* Mass Movement
Define Mass Movement
The downhill movement of rock and soil
Factors affecting the rate of Marine Erosion
- The longer the fetch, the larger the waves and the more erosion
- The harder the rock (Geology) the slower the erosion rate
- The deeper the sea close to the coast, the smaller the waves and so the less erosion
- The larger the beach the less erosion there will be on the cliff face
Define Transportation
The carrying of eroded materials by the sea
Types of Transporation
- Traction
- Saltation
- Suspension
Longshore drift transports eroded material in a zig zag pattern by traction, saltation and suspension
Define Deposition
A type of Marine process
The dropping down of eroded materials along the coast to form beaches, sand dunes, spits, tombolos, bars and salt marshes. These are all landforms of deposition.
Examples of Landforms of Deposition
Examples of these landforms of deposition are as follows: A Sand Dune system A Spit A Tombolo A Bar A Salt Marsh
What are the types of mass movement?
Rock Falls Rock Slides Rotational Slumps Mud Flows Soil Creep
