Landforms in Middle Course Of A River Flashcards
What is traction?
When boulders and pebbles are rolled along river bed
What is saltation?
When sand sized particles are bounced along river bed by flow of water
What is suspension?
When small particles are carried along within river
What is solution?
When some minerals are dissolved in water
What is a Meander?
A bend in a river
What happens to the course of a river as it approaches its middle stages?
It flows over flatter land
What does lateral mean?
Side-to-side
What are the types of transportation down the stream?
- traction
- saltation
- suspension
- solution
How many stages is there to a cross section through a meander?
4
What is the first stage of a cross section through a meander?
River erodes laterally
What is the second stage of a cross section through a meander?
Water is pushed to outer bend of meander
What is the third stage of a cross section through a meander?
River erodes outer bend to form a river cliff e.g. Abrasion, hydraulic action
What is the fourth stage of a cross section through a meander?
River moves to inner bend and deposits material. This is called a slip off slope
