What is the purpose of classification and the binomial system for naming organisms?
The purpose of classification and the binomial system is to bring order and logic to the study of organisms, to give an idea of relationship between organisms and to allow for identification of species.
What is the basis for natural and artificial classification?
The basis for natural classification is the natural relationships between organisms, including internal and external features along with similarities of origin, structure and position regardless of function in adults.
The basis for artificial classification is two easily observable characteristics.
What is the definition of species?
Species are reproductively isolated populations with phenotypic similarities.
State a summary of the characteristics of the five main kingdoms.
Monera are prokaryotes and cell walls consisting of peptidoglycan. Protista are eukaryotes which are mainly unicellular or colonial. Fungi are plant like but cannot carry out photosynthesis. Plantae are multicellular, complex and adapted for photosynthesis. Animalia are multicellular heterotrophs, many of which exhibit advanced tissue.
What is the haplobiontic and diplobiontic life cycles?
