Enzymes🧬 Flashcards
What are the 1st and 2nd law of thermodynamics?
The 1st law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another and can also be stored.
The 2nd law states that all natural processes tend to move in a direction that increases randomness called entropy.
What is the difference between exergonic and endergonic reactions?
Exergonic reactions are where energy is emitted and endergonic reactions are where energy is consumed.
Define metabolism, anabolism and catabolism.
Metabolism is defined as all of the reactions occurring within the cell, metabolism is divided into two categories being anabolism and catabolism.
Anabolism is defined as the build up or synthesis of molecules and usually requires energy. Catabolism is defined as the break down of complex compounds into simpler ones usually by releasing energy(hydrolysis).
Explain how enzymes work.
