Explain the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS)
Example: 18STH 88123 64213
First stick is Grid Zone Designator (Numbers) and Grid Square Identifier (Letters). Easting (Lines of Longitude) (increases moving west to east). Northing (Lines of Latitude) (increases moving south to north)
Attack Points
Permanent known landmarks that are easily identified on your map and on the ground
Collecting Features
Any feature along your route that you can see on your map that you will recognize in real life that confirms where you are (streams, roads, trails, buildings, draws, fingers, etc.)
Catching Feature
Any feature along your route that you can see on your map to stop yourself if you have gone too far
How many feet of elevation change does each contour line indicate?
10 feet of elevation change
What is SOSES?
Shape (fingers, draws hills). Orientation (map is oriented in the same direction as you are traveling. Size. Elevation. Slope (works in conjunction with elevation; tighter vs. more spread contour lines)
What are the methods of locating position?
Inspection (orienting your map to match man-made or natural features with what you see in the terrain). Intersection (determining the location of an unknown point by sighting in on it and determining an azimuth/distance). Resection (determining your own position by sighting in on one or more known features)
What types of search patterns are there?
Concentric Circles and Cloverleaf
What causes compass interference and how far away must you be for your compass to work properly?
High tension power lines (55 m). Field gun, truck, tank (18 m). Telephone/barbed wire (10 m). Machine gun (2 m). Service rifle (0.5 m)
