Laminar Airflow Workstations Flashcards
How big are the particles that pass through the HEPA?
0.3 Microns
What kinds of airflow can Laminar Airflow Workstations have?
Vertical airflow or horizontal airflow
What is HEPA short for?
H - High
E - Efficiency
P - Particulate
A - Air
What is Laminar flow?
Continuous movement at a uniform rate in one direction
Laminar Air flow should not be used to prepare what kind of Medication and why?
It should not be used for Chemo because it will blow the particulates towards the operator.
How do Biological Safety Cabinets keep the air filtered/clean?
They filter the existing air in the Cabinet through the HEPA filter then put it back in the cabinet (recycle cabinet air)
What do you clean an Laminar Airflow Workstation with?
70% isopropyl alcohol on a gauze pad
What part of the Laminar Airflow Workstation do you clean first?
the bar
How should you clean the bar in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
From one side to the other in one continuous movement (a ——-> b)
After you clean the bar in a Laminar Airflow Workstation, what do you clean next?
The inside vertical walls
How do you clean the internal walls of a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
Clean one side of the LAFW using back-to-front motions, moving from top to bottom of side.
How often should you change 70% isopropyl alcohol gauze pads when cleaning an Laminar Airflow Workstation?
Everytime you change between walls/parts (bar to wall , change the gauze. Same for wall to wall and wall to tabletop)
Should you reclean a previously cleaned area in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
NO
Should you clean both walls of the Laminar Airflow workstation at the same time?
NO, clean one wall and then the other, switching gauze pads in between.
How should you clean the bottom for the LAFW?
Using a new wetted gauze pad, use side-to-side strokes, and again moving from back to front
(a—->b, then c

In what order should you clean an Laminar Airflow Workstation?
Bar, One wall, Other wall, then finally the bottom.
How should you place items in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
Place smaller items closer to the HEPA filter and bigger items further away from the HEPA filter.
How far inside of the Laminar Airflow Workstation should you work?
6 inches inside
How far from the back of the Laminar Airflow Workstation should you work?
at least 3 inches
How should you pick up items from inside the Laminar Airflow Workstation?
approach from the open side of the workstation, avoid the tendency to grasp the item with a full hand.
How should you place non-sterile items in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
You should place non-sterile items downstream from sterile items. (B = sterile, C = Non-sterile)
filter
Airflow –> B C
Should your hand pass above any objects in a Vertical Laminar Airflow Workstation? Why or Why not?
No because it disrupts the airflow
When working in a Vertical Laminar Airflow Workstation, where should you place larger containers?
The back of the work area
What is the best way to ensure that you don’t put your hand above objects in a Vertical Laminar Airflow Workstation?
Slide your hand along the bottom of the LAFW work area, or along the compounding surface in a DCA (Direct Compounding Area), toward and around the container or object that you’re trying to grab
Should you sterilize all surfaces that require entry (puncture) with an alcohol wipe?
Yes
Before using a Laminar Airflow Workstation, what should an tech don?
GARB
What counts as GARB?
Shoe Covers, Hair Bonnets, Gowns, Gloves, and Handwashing.
What is the correct order to put GARB on?
1.) Remove Jewelry
2.) Put on SHOE COVERS
3.) Put on HAIR BONNET
4.) Put on MASK
5.) Put on GOWN and secure strings
6.) Wash hands
7.) Put on STERILE GLOVES
What’s a good rule of thumb when putting on GARB?
Go from Dirtiest to cleanest.
Can you sneeze when working in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
NOPE
Can you cough when working in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
NOOO
Can you talk when working in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
NOPE ON A ROPE, KEEP THINE TRAP SHUT
Should you open windows or doors when working in a Laminar Airflow Workstation?
No, the breeze from the open door will mess with the sterile airflow of the workstation
Why shouldn’t you work near the edge of the Laminar Airflow Station?
The edge is where the Laminar flow air will mix with the room air (basically it’s less sterile than the air further inside the station)
