Q

Lamina III, IV

A

Much of this area is filled with a group of cell bodies called the ‘Nucleus Proprius’
-Sensory info–> touch, pressure, tickle

Q

Lamina V

A

On the lateral edge of this lamina (cervical area only) is a complex of fibers and cell bodies known as the reticular formation of the cord
-This lamina is found on all cord levels

Q

Lamina VI

A

Sends info to motor neurons and cerebrum (inside ant. horn)

  • Responsible for spinal reflexes
  • *Most anterior aspect of the posterior (dorsal) horn

Q

Lamina VII

A
  • In the intermediate gray area (lateral horn included when present)
  • -Many descending tract fibers synapse with neurons in this lamina
  • –The nucleus dorsalis (Clarke’s Nucleus or Column)
  • —Intermediolateral nucleus (intermediolateral cells)

Q

Nucleus Dorsalis (Clarke’s Nucleus)

A
  • Extends like a column from cord level C8 down through L3.
  • -These cell bodies contribute most axons to a famous ascending fasciculus called the Posterior Spinocerebellar Tract

Q

Intermediolateral nucleus (intermediolateral cells)

A

Again, a column-like nucleus, this time forming the bulk of the lateral horn cell bodies from T1-T12 of the cord.

  • It appears, but without a distinct horn at cord levels L1,2 and S2,3,4.
  • -These are the autonomic motor neurons known as preganglionic sympathetic (T1-L2) neurons and preganglionic parasympathetic neurons (S2,3,4)

Q

Lamina IX

A

Most of the body’s skeletal muscles are motor innervated from neurons in this lamina

  • -It is the reason the ventral horn is called the “somatic motor horn”
  • Class A alpha motor neurons are abundant here
  • This layer is more like a series of disconnected islands than a true layer (lamina)
