Lamina Chase 2019 Developing thirst for knowledge Flashcards
What are the key concepts in what we read?
Examining the relationship between: uncertainty, curiosity, learning, transfer and affect
What questions did the authors set out to answer
Does uncertainty have an effect on curiosity ?
How did the author(s) go about studying their research question(s)?
- Procedure
- Instructional content - ratio structure
- Pretest: learning → instruction day 1 (hookes law) & Instruction day 2 (Newtons law) → Posttest: learning & transfer (ransom assignment and differ by condition
- What is measured for curiosity and affect during day 1 and day 2
- Curiosity : 8 items measuring if they are interested in what they just learned
- Affect: 6 pos & 6 neg words - you rate how you feel on a scale of 1-5 for each of these 6 words
What did they find?
- H1: Curiosity - Expected Uncertainty = Unexpected Uncertainty > No Uncertainty (wrong hyp)
- A similar level of curiosity for EU and UU
- UU > EU > NU
- H2: Affect - NU = EU < UU (correct)
- Positive affect: there was no difference in EU and UU
- H3: Learning - EU > UU > NU (wrong)
- Measured by Pre and post test scores
- Similar learning across all conditions
- UU = EU = NU
- Invention task performance : similar across conditions
- H3.2: Transfer: EU > UU > NU (wrong)
- doesn’t matter if you feel bad in the moment or not, your transfer scores are not affected
- UU = EU > NU
- Results: Predictor of Learning
- Positive affect positively predicts learning, above and beyond condition
- Results: Predictor of Transfer
- Curiosity predicts transfer, NOT above and beyond condition
Why should we care?
Uncertainty and the negative/positve effects -> learning and trasnfer
Q1: In the study, uncertainty was induced by ____
Ask students to invent physics formulas themselves
Q2: Negative affects (eg. distressed, anxious) usually facilitate students’ learning
False
Q3: In the study, curiosity was measured through
Students self-report
Uncertainty
- Uncertainty → + negative affect → - Learning and transfer
- Uncertainty → + positive affect → - Learning and transfer
Expected and Unexpected uncertainty will determine learning and transfer
