Define the Lambrusco Varieties and DOCs

A

1. Lambrusco Salamino

This is the most widely planted variety. It produces fragrant, deep coloured, full-bodied wines with high acidity and is mostly blended with other Lambrusco varieties.

The DOC for this variety is named Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce that requires a minimum of 85% percent of this variety and allows a maximum yield of 133 hl/ha.

2. Lambrusco Grasparossa

This variety does best on clay and slit and is the only variety to be grown mainly on the hillsides.

It produces deep coloured, full-bodied wine with medium (+) tannins.

The DOC for this variety is named Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro that requires a minimum of 85% percent of this variety and allows a maximum yield of 126 hl/ha.

3. Lambrusco di Sorbara

This variety makes pale, lighter bodied wines with high acidity.

The DOC for this variety is named Lambrusco di Sorbara that requires a minimum of 60% percent of this variety and allows a maximum yield of 126 hl/ha.

4. Reggiano Lambrusco / Reggiano DOC

This DOC is named after the province of Reggio-Emilia not after the name of Lambrusco varieties. It is made with Lambrusco varieties within a delimited area in the province of Reggio-Emilia. Maximum yields are 126 hl/ha.

5. Lambrusco di Modena DOC / Modena DOC

This DOC is named after the province of Modena not after the name of Lambrusco varieties. It is made with Lambrusco varieties grown in the province of Modena. Regulations permit very high yields 161 hl/ha that can lead to low levels of fruit concentration.
