The entire piece was hand made and one of a kind.

It would’ve been expensive for materials as they would have been imported from outside Europe. Reflected in large cost.

Hand carved from chrysoprase, using this as a basis for the adjoining elements.
Sections made from gold would have been made using a lost wax casting technique.

Wings and Body

Wings and body are enamel.
Enamelling has many different techniques to give a variety of colours and effects. This piece demonstrates the Champlevé technique.

Would have been set in to the gold by hand and this would have been the last stage.
