What is Lagos
(Where?)
Lagos is a metacity in the South-West of Nigeria on the West coastline of the African continent. Nigeria borders the Atlantic ocean to the South and the nations of Benin to the West and Cameroon to the East.
Problems facing lagos due to the urban growth
Development of slums - housing shortages homelessness
Poor sanitation e.g sewage sewer - diseases poor access to clean water
Poor infrastructure e.g transport - congestion long journey

National Importance
Nigeria’s center for media 1/4 of Nigeria’s wealth relies on Lagos for trade.

Developed as a center for ICT
Many NCIs have chosen to locate in Lagos
Housing - Bad
Housing prices increasing making them too costly
66% live in slums = built illegally ppl face eviction
Housing - Good
new city called Eko Atlantic which will house a 1/4 a million of people but wont be affordable bc ppl = poor
Employment - Bad
Not enough formal jobs about 60% work informal e.g street vendors.
Employment - Good
Wide range of jobs in Lagos many which = better paid
Water - Bad
Only 40% is connected to water. people pay higher prices to informal sellers.

Many wealthy benefit from healthy water
There are public taps for others and many ways to buy water.
Healthcare - Bad
Up to 15 households share a toilet the waste = straight to the local water sources.
Contaminated = health issues
Healthcare - Good
Better access to more hospitals and better medicine available
Crime - Bad
Many places e.g Makoko are patrolled by “area boys” who commit crimes.

Police have been provided with helicopters.
