These are areas of illegal housing offering basic shelter with a bad standard of living.
Urban Challenges in Lagos?
• Water supply:
many drink polluted water, only 10% have a treated water supply
• Sanitation:
dysentery and cholera are a huge issue, especially due to dirty water and crowded slums
• Energy:
many do not have a reliable source of energy, the wealthy rely on their own backup generators
Challenges to Health and Education in Lagos:
•Health:
though healthcare is provided, it’s not always free and may include a long wait, doctors and nurses move to economically developed countries
• Education:
secondary education is very limited and many children have to work to help provide for their family
Challenges of Unemployment and Crime in Lagos:
• Unemployment:
10% unemployed with 40% working in the informal economy such as olusosun landfill. these jobs are often dangerous and poorly paid
• Crime:
Area boys have a presence on many streets and kidnapping is a huge issue as well as problems with robbery and vandalism
Challenges to the Environment in Lagos
40% of the 10,000 tonnes daily is collected and sent to landfill where only 13% is recycled.
Air pollution is 5x higher than the international limit.

How can urban planning improve life in Lagos?
•Makoko floating school:
sustainable local resources, as well as being environmentally friendly (solar cells). it could educate 60 children at a time and act as a town centre for events etc.
