What is Charismatic Authority?
A form of authority that relies on a persons personality to gain respect from his followers. Must keep demonstrating his prowess or his popularity decrease

A traditional leader may use an Appel to customs and practices from the past to rule. Acts as a father figure, expects loyalty from his subjects

Relies on laws and the processes of government to establish authority. Utilise elections and legislation to keep power.
EG: Julia Gillard, Bill Shorten, Daniel Andrews
Why do people get involved in politics?
- to voice their opinion about a topic or issue
- to bring change to their society or situation
- to meet people with similar ideas and beliefs

Hard Power: a coercive form of power that can be used to make people change their position: using force
Soft Power: getting the desired outcome by attracting others rather than manipulating them: using words

Leaders who take it upon themselves to make things happen. Leadership style is seen as radical and can be done in positive and negative forms. Risky, if the public don’t accept or share the vision or goals of the leaders, and the results don’t come

Safest and most common form to leadership. They maintain the status quo instead of trying to change it.

Leaders that actively oppose inevitable social and political movements. Characterised by stubbornness and unwillingness to move from their current standpoint.

Pragmatic Leader
A leader able to make decisions that have a realistic and practical foundation. They often give up on ideas in order to work with current realities or practicalities
EG: Carter, Ford, Bush
Consultative Leader
A leader that has the ability to seek advice and gather as much information as possible before making decisions. Could be viewed as indecisive, or the right approach to decision making.
EG: Daniel Andrews, JFK
Fundamentalist LEADER
a leader who adheres strictly to a literal or narrow religious text, and follows laws that ensure its adherence
