Ladders Flashcards
Articulating Boom Ladder
An apparatus with a series of booms and a platform on the end. It is maneuvered into position by adjusting the various boom sections into place to position the platform at the desired location.
Bed Ladder
The nonextending part of an extension ladder.
Extension Ladder
A ladder consisting of two or more sections that has the ability to be extended to a desired height through the use of the halyard.
Fly Ladder
The portion of a ladder that extends out from the bed ladder. Also called the fly section.
Halyard
Rope or cable that is used to raise the fly portion of an extension ladder.
Hydraulic Pistons
Mechanical rams that operate by pressure exerted through the use of a liquid, usually some form of oil.
Ladder Pipe
An appliance that is attached to the underside of an aerial ladder for an elevated water application.
Nested
The state when all the ladders of an extension ladder are unextended.
NFPA Standard 1931
Standard for manufacture’s design of fire department ground ladders.
NFPA Standard 1932
Standard on use, maintenance, and service testing of in-service fire department ground ladders.
Staypoles
The stabilizer pols attached to the sides of Bangor ladders that are used to assist in the raising of this type of ladder.
Tip Arc
The path that a ladder’s tip will take while being raised.
Tower Ladder
An apparatus with telescopic boom that has a platform on the end of the boom or ladder. It can be extended or retracted and rotated like an aerial ladder.
Turntable
The rotating platform of a ladder that affors an elevating ladder device the ability to turn to any target from a fixed position.
Working Length
The length of the the ladder that spans the distance from the ground to the point of contact with the structure. This does not include any distance the ladder might go beyond the point of contact as would be the case when the tip extends beyond the roof.
Truss Type Beams
Construction that removes non-support portions of a solid structural member without reducing strength but reducing weight.
Ladder
structure consisting of two long sides crossed by parallel rungs, used to climb up and down.
Pads
Nonslip pieces of rubber or plastic that attack to the bottom of a ladder to prevent slipping.
Protection Plates
Reinforced metal that is built up at chafing points to avoid weakening creating by friction.
Straight ladders are usually found at which lengths?
12 to 20 ft.

Proper ladder angle is
75 degrees or 1/4 the length of what your laddering.
Where should a ladder be placed on a fire escape?
At or below the top railing. Similar to rescue on a window. If placed to the side of the fire escape it should be several rungs above the escape rail to have more points of contact.
When saving numerous victims off a large area with multiple ladders how should they be set up?
One ladder should be for ascending and all others for descending.
Other types of ladder usage are?
Portable pool, Barrier, Structure support, Hoist point, Ventilation fan supports,
What are the most common causes of ladder related injuries?
Overreaching, overbalancing, overloading ladder limits.
When ascending a ladder where should the firefighter look?
Straight a head, occasionally above to where he is going.
Climbing path
The invisible tunnel in which a firefighter has to climb through with SCBA to the top. Reconsider position if you have to squeeze to avoid wires etc.
The longer the ladder the more what will occur?
Lateral lean
When ladders are stored how many support points should they have?
More than two, or preferably on flat surface.
Ladders should never be painted especially wood ladders, when can you use small amounts of paint?
Identification, Visibility, Quick Reference, Hoist Points.
The three types of carries are?
Suitcase, Shoulder, Flat

Who should be in place when raising ladders near overhead wires?
Safety Officer
Any extension ladder over 25 ft normally requires how many people to carry it?
