Laboratory Reagents and Equipment Flashcards
A reagent that meets or exceed the specifications of purity
Reagent Grade
Chemicals of reasonable purity for application that have no official standard for purity
Technical Grade
Reagent or solution from large container bottle, usually purchased from manufacturers
Stock Solution or Stock Reagent
Repacked solution than can always be used for experiments
Working Solution
2 Categories of Lab Equipment
Mass Equipment
Volumetric Equipment
2 Types of Volumetric Equipment
“To Deliver”
“To Contain”
An Analytical balance with a maximum capacity ranging between 160 and 200g with a 0.1mg Tolerance
Macrobalance
An Analytical Balance with a capacity of 10 - 30 g with a 0.01mg tolerance
Semimicroanalytical Balance
An Analytical Balance with a capacity of 1 - 3 g with a 0.001mg tolerance
Microanalytical Balance
Have a max capacity of 150 - 200g with a precision of 1mg; used to weigh quantities up to 2 decimal places
Top Loading Balance
Used to weight qunatities up to 4 decimal places
Analytical Balance
Substance placed directly on a balance and the mass is read
Direct Weighing
Where to read or measure the volume of a liquid?
Lower Meniscus
Volumeteric equipment used to contain a specified amount of liquid; Denoted by TC
“To COntain”
Volumetric Equipment used to deliver a specified amount of liquid; Denoted by TD
“To Deliver”
Features a flat bottom to contain liquid or solid samples; Can be Heated; Used to catch filtrates from filtering operations
Beakers
Have Wide bottom, conical bodies, and tall cylindrical necks for mixing, cooling, incubation, filtration, or storage; Can be Heated
Erlenmeyer Flask
have a narrow cylindrical shape with markings along the cylinder that represents the amount of liquid being measured; Can not be Heated; Used to measure liquids
Graduated Cylinder
used in preparation of solutions with accurate concentration; have long elongated and narrow necks that have a single etched ring graduation
Volumetric Flask
graduated glass or plastic pipettes that are used to measure and dispense a specific volume of liquid
Serological Pipettes and Mohr Pipettes
glass pipettes that are calibrated to accurately measure a fixed amount of liquid; Has a reservoir and single graduation mark
Volumetric Pipettes
Used to draw liquids into the Pipette
Aspirator
a graduated glass tube with a stopcock located at the bottom of the tube; used for titrations
Burette
