Acid Base Titrations Flashcards
Why do we need to press “TARE” when weighing in an analytical balance?
Pressing tare resets the balance’s display to zero. When you measure a compound, you don’t want to include the container’s weight in the reading.
A technique where a solution of a known concentration (usually the titrant) is used to determine the concentration of the analyte in a sample.
Titration
what is required of the titrant to completely react with the analyte
serves as the analytical signal.
Volume
4 Types of Titration
Acid-Base Titration
Precipitation Titration
Redox Titration
Complex Titration
Solution that is placed in a burette during titration
Titrant
a colored substance whose change in color signals the end
of the titration process.
Indicator
How to know equivalence point
mol titrant = mol analyte
point in titration where the indicator has change color, signaling the end of the titration process, usually requires the addition of a small excess of the titrant.
End point
is a highly purified compound that serves as a reference material in volumetric and mass titrimetric methods
Primary standard
Primary Standard should be:
High purity
Atmospheric stability
Absence of hydrate water
Modest cost
Reasonable solubility in the titration medium
Reasonably large molar mass
Solution with known concentration
Standard solutions
The process of establishing accurately the concentration of the titrant
Standardization
A sour liquid that is made by fermenting substances that contain sugar, such as fruit or wine
Vinegar
What is the indicator used in the acid-base titration?
Phenolphthalein
What kind of indicator is Phenolphthalein
