Laboratory Equipment Flashcards
Hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated
Beaker
Used to move beakers containing hot liquids
Beaker tongs
Hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated
Erlenmeyer flask
Used for the mixing of chemicals. Has narrow neck that prevents splash exposure
Florence flask
Used to measure volumes of liquids
Graduated cylinder
Useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle
Test tube holder
Used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders
Test tube brushes
Holds and organizes test tubes on the laboratory counter
Test tube racks
Used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination
Rubber stoppers
Used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time
Spot plates
Used to manually stir solutions; used to transfer a single drop of a solution
Glass stir rod
Used to pick up small objects
Forceps
Used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another
Funnel
Used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction
Watch glass
Has a spout that delivers a wash solution to a specific area
Wash bottle
Used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel
Weighing boat
Used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids
Bunsen burner
Used to light Bunsen burners
Strikers
Used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements
Evaporating dish
Used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures
Crucible
Used as a support for porcelain crucibles when being heated over a Bunsen burner
Clay triangle
For handling hot crucibles; used to pick up other hot objects except beakers
Crucible tongs
Safe and convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner
Ringstand
Used to secure test tubes, distillation columns, and burets to the ringstand
Utility clamps
Connect to a ringstand and provide a stable, elevated platform for the reaction
Iron ring
Sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker
Wire gauze
Used for burets during titration
Double buret clamps
Used primarily to cut glass rod
Triangular file
Used to identify acids and bases
Litmus paper
Used when large volumes of gases are produced
Gas collecting bottle
Used to transfer a small volume of liquid (less than 1 ml)
Medicine dropper
Measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids
Mohr pipet
Provide a surface for semi-micro scale experiments, such as drop reactions and testing of acids and bases
Glass plates
Used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers
Spatula
