Laboratory Flashcards
Concentration (C)
The concentration of a solution is dependant on the amount (mg) of substance and the volume (mL) it is in
Dilutions
The concentration of a substance is reduced.
The final volume (V2 is made up of two components, the diluent and the initial volume (V)
V2 = V1 + diluent
Dilution Factor (DF)
DF = C1/C2 = V2/V1
Where C1 is the concentration before dilution
C2 is the concentration after dilution
V1 is the volume before dilution
V2 is the volume after dilution
If a solution is diluted 2 fold, this means it contains 1 volume of undiluted solution together with 1 volume of diluent.
So if a solution was diluted 15 fold, this would mean it contained one volume of undiluted solution, together with 14 volumes of diluent.
The relationship between concentration and volume before and after a dilution.
C1V1 = C2V2
Where C1 is the concentration before dilution C2 is the concentration after dilution V1 is the volume before dilution V2 is the volume after dilution
