Labelling Flashcards
BECKER (1971)
Carried out an important interactionist study of labelling:
- Based on interviewing 60 Chicago high school teachers.
- Found that they judged pupils based on the expectation of the ‘ideal pupil’
(MC students were more closer to the ‘ideal pupil’)
HEMPEL-JORGENSEN (2009)
- Working class primary school where discipline is key, placed the expectations of the ‘ideal pupil’ based on behaviour
Whereas - Middle class primary school where the expectations of the ‘ideal pupil’ is based on terms of personality and academic ability.
DUNNE AND GAZELEY (2008)
“School’s persistently produce working class underachievement” because of labelling and assumptions of the teacher.
- Through interviews, findings showed that teachers normalised the underachievement of WC students, due to having the belief that their parents hadn’t also cared enough for their educational achievement.
RIST (1970)
Kindergarten teachers had divided pupils based on their class background. MC students who engaged more were labelled as “Tigers” as they were much more fast and so the teacher favoured them more than WC students.
