BOURDIEU (1984)
Three types of Capital:
- Cultural capital: MC parents are able to transmit their values and experiences of education onto their own child so that they may exceed in education achievement.
- Educational and economic capital: MC parents with cultural capital are able to meet the needs of the school curriculum and gain qualifications. They are also able to send their children to private school.
SULLIVAN (2001)
Used Questionnaires to conduct a survey of 465 pupils in four school.
- Asked about hobbies and tested vocabulary understanding.
- Found that students who read complex fiction had greater cultural capital. And that they were children of graduates, and so therefore were going to be more successful at GCSEs.
