Lab Values from lecture Flashcards
What labs are in the chem-7?
Na, K, Cl, SCr, BUN, CO2, Glu
What other labs can be done?
Mag, Ca, Phos
What shows kidney function?
SCr/BUN ratio, CrCl
What does a CBC consist of?
WBC, Plts, Hgb, Hct
Sensitivity
True positive
Specificity
true negative
What is the normal range for Na?
135-145 mEq/L
What can hyponatremia induce?
Seizures. Normal is 0.9% Na.
What is bad about hypernatremia?
Thirst, irritability, seizures
What is the normal range for K+?
The normal range for K+ is 3.5-5 mEq/L
What can cause hypokalemia?
Insulin, meds, vomiting, diarrhea, anything that gets rid of electrolytes
What can cause hyperkalemia?
Burns, crush injuries, increased intake, decreased output
What does potassium regulate in our bodies?
Regulation of muscle and nerve excitability through action potentials
What is the range for normal Cl?
96-106 mEq/L
What does Cl do?
It follows sodium to maintain osmolarity
What is the normal range for bicarbonate?
22-32 mEq/L
What does bicarbonate assess?
metabolic pH.
What is BUN?
Blood urea nitrogen
What does BUN assess?
It measures serum nitrogen as a waste product from protein metabolism. Renal function is assessed, especially hydration.
What is the reference range for BUN?
8-20 mEq
What is the serum creatinine reference range?
0.7-1.2 mg/dL
What is the ratio of BUN:SCr that indicates hydration?
20:1. Any higher and there could be dehydration.
What is SCr?
It is a decomposition product produced by muscles. Not specific.
What does the Cockcroft-Gault equation measure?
CrCl
