Lab values Flashcards
Platelets
250,000-450,000
WBC
4,500-17,500
Hgb
11.5-15.2
Increases when dehydrated due to concentration of fluid in blood vessels
Decreases in fluid volume excess because blood is diluted
Hct
Normally 3x the Hgb value
34-47%
Cholesterol
65-230
Bicarbonate (arterial)
19-25
pH (arterial)
7.35-7.45
Urine specific gravity
1.005-1.030
General indicator of hydration
– Except in infants d/t immature kidneys
Issues: increased d/t dehydration
Creatinine
0.3-0.6
Potassium
3.5-5.0
Found primarily in intracellular fluid
Issues:
– Hypokalemia= vomiting, diarrhea, sweating > loss in extracellular fluid > compensation of intracellular K > decrease in serum K
— S/S: cardiac arryhythmias, muscle weakness, hypotonia
Glucose
60-110
Sodium
138-145
Found in extracellular fluid
Moves with chloride
Functions: regulates body’s water content, maintains acid-base balance
Issues:
– Hypernatremia= fluid losses through skin, GI tract, or urine causes body fluid to become more concentrated
– Hyponatremia= fluid overload, third spacing, kidneys cannot excrete free water causes body fluid to be diluted
Calcium
8.8-11.2
BUN
4-20
