Lab Unit 14 - Peripheral And ANS Flashcards
ANTERIOR RAMI
Travel superiorly to supply the muscles of the upper and lower limbs, the anterior thorax and abdomen, and part of the back.
What type of nerves are spinal nerves?
All spinal nerves are mixed nerves.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31
What are the 4 large plexuses?
- Cervical plexus
- Brachial plexus
- Lumbar plexus
- Sacral plexus
Cervical plexuses consist of?
Anterior rami of C1-C4, with small contributions from C5.
What does the cervical plexus serve?
Skin of the head and neck, and certain neck muscles. Major branch is the phrenic nerve.
PHRENIC NERVE
Major branch of the cervical plexus, serves the diaphragm.
Brachial plexus consists of?
Anterior rami of C5 - T1. Cords and trunks.
Nerves that originate from brachial plexus?
- Axillary nerve
- Musculocutaneous nerve
- Radial nerve
- Ulnar nerve
- Median nerve
AXILLARY NERVE
Serves structures near the axilla, including the deltoid and teres minor muscles and the skin around this region.
MUSCULOCUTANEOUS NERVE
Serves the anterior arm muscles that flex the forearm (such as the biceps brachii muscle) and the skin of the lateral forearm
RADIAL NERVE
Serves the muscles that extend the forearm and hand as well as the skin in the lateral hand
ULNAR NERVE
Supplies certain muscles in the forearm that flex the hand, most of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, and the skin over the medial hand.
MEDIAN NERVE
Supplies most of the muscles of the forearm that flex the hand, certain intrinsic hand muscles, and the skin over the anterior and lateral hand.
Lumbar plexus consists of?
Anterior rami of L1 - L4 with a small contribution from T12
Nerves that originate from the lumbar plexus?
- Iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves
- Genitofemoral nerve
- Femoral nerve
- Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
- Obturator nerve
ILIOHYPOGASTRIC AND ILIOINGUINAL NERVES
Both supply motor interaction to the trans versus abdominis and internal oblique muscles and sensory to the pelvic area.
GENITOFEMORAL NERVE
Supply the cremaster muscle in males and the skin around the anteromedial thigh and genitals in both sexes.
FEMORAL NERVE
Largest nerve of the lumbar plexus. Provides motor interaction to most of the anterior thigh muscles that extend the knee and sensory innervation to the skin of the anterior and medial thigh. It gives off a large sensory branch called the saphenous nerve m, which supplies the knee joint, medial leg, and foot.
LATERAL FEMORAL CUTANEOUS NERVE
Provides mainly sensory innervation to the skin of the anterolateral thigh.
OBTURATOR NERVE
Located in the medial thigh, where it supplies the medial thigh muscles and the skin of the proximal, medial thigh.
Sacral plexus consists of?
Anterior rami of L4 - S4.
Nerves that originate from the sacral plexus?
- Superior gluteal nerve
- Inferior gluteal nerve
- Pudendal nerve
- Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve
- Sciatic nerve
SUPERIOR GLUTEAL NERVE
The first branch of the sacral plexus is the superior gluteal nerve, which supplies the gluteus medius, the gluteus minimus, and tensor fascia lata muscles.
