Joints and Articulations Flashcards
SYNARTHROSIS
Immovable joints
AMPHIARTHROSIS
Joints that allow some motion
DIARTHROSIS
Freely moveable joints
PLANE
Flat articulate surfaces that allow bones to glide. Examples: intertarsal joints, intercarpal joints, articulations between superior and inferior articular processes of vertebrae
HINGE
Bones that fit together like the hinge of a door. Example: elbow, knee, interphalangeal joints
PIVOT
Bone rotates around another bone. Ex: atlantoaxial and proximal radioulnar joints
CONDYLOID
One bone that fits into the concave surface of another bone. Example: radiocarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints
SADDLE
Like condyloid, but permit a greater range of motion. Example: first carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
