Can - long pants, closed toe and heel shoes, and pulled back long hair
Can’t - dangling jewelry and shorts
What should your behavior be?
No horseplay, stay in assigned area, and do what told

No! Not even gum or a tiny piece of candy
What should your lab area look like?
Free of clutter: throw debris away promptly, you are responsible for cleaning are before leaving, and no backpacks on table
Aisles should be clear; no backpacks in aisles.
You can’t sit on tables or counters
How should you approach odors?
When you smell chemicals use a wafting motion, never put your face near the mouth of the container
Are you allowed in science storage rooms or preparation areas?
No unless given special permission
How should you handle glass?
- protect your hands when using glass
- do not heat broken/cracked glass
- hot and cold glass look the same
- dispose of glass in appropriate contianer
How should you handle chemicals?
- consider all chemicals dangerous
- read labels on reagent bottles carefully prior to using them.
- never return unused reagent bottles to stock bottles.
- never touch or taste substance used during chemistry lab.
What should you do in the event of an acid spill?
Notify the teacher and neutralize the spill with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate.) Brush up the residual powder and finish cleaning baby flushing the area with plenty of water.
What should you do in the event of spilling a base?
Notify the teacher immediately and neutralize them with vinegar (acetic acid.) Then flush the area with plenty of water.
How should you heat substances?
- always heat substances under a fume hood.
- never point the mouth of a test tube towards yourself or anyone else when heating it.
- never leave a flame unattended.
How should you use flammable substances?
- keep combustible materials away from open flames
- don’t heat flammable liquids with an open flame or in an open container
- they shouldn’t be stored on counter tops; instead in a clearly marked fire resistant metal cabinet
How should you dispose of chemicals?
- As indicated by your teacher
- not all chemicals can be poured down the drain
- do not throw solid materials in the sink
What emergency equipment should you know the place of?
First aid kit in case you get hurt!
fire blanket and fire extinguisher in case you/something catches fire.
safety shower and eye wash in case you come in contact with chemicals
