Q

What is the probing technique?

A

hold side of probe tip flat against the tooth surface, probe parallel to long axis of tooth for vertical insertion

slide probe along tooth surface vertically down to base of pocket (sulcus),

maintain contact to side of tooth

as probe is passed down side of tooth, rougness may be felt

count mm that show the probe on the gingival margin and subtract from total number

use walking stroke

9
Q

what is the difference in supragingival and subgingival scaling?

A

Supragingival calculus deposits are located coronal to the gingival margin, usually on the crowns of the teeth. they are used for removal of light deposits

Subgingival are located apical to the gingival margin and below the gumline

when do we prefer a biopsy?

A

unusual lesion that cannot be identified with clinical certainty

any lesion that does not show evidence of healing in a 2 week time period

persistant, white, thick, hypekeratotic lesion and any mass that does not break thru the surface epithelium

Q

What is a disclosing agent?

A

preparation in a liquir, tablet, or lozenge that contains a dye or other coloring agent. In dental hygiene, a disclosing agent is used to identify dental biofilm deposits for instruction, evaluation, and research.
