lab quiz Flashcards
How many cutting edges does a scaler have?
two cutting edges per working end
How many cutting edges does a universal curet have?
two cutting edges per working end
how many cutting edges does a gracey curet have?
only one cutting edge per working end
What is the probing technique?
hold side of probe tip flat against the tooth surface, probe parallel to long axis of tooth for vertical insertion
slide probe along tooth surface vertically down to base of pocket (sulcus),
maintain contact to side of tooth
as probe is passed down side of tooth, rougness may be felt
count mm that show the probe on the gingival margin and subtract from total number
use walking stroke
Names of explorers
sickle or shepherds hook
Pigtail or cowhorn
how can you detect calculus other than with an explorer?
disclosing solution
what are the three parts of an instrument?
handle, shank, working end
Appropriate instrument grasp?
modified pen grasp
what is the difference in supragingival and subgingival scaling?
Supragingival calculus deposits are located coronal to the gingival margin, usually on the crowns of the teeth. they are used for removal of light deposits
Subgingival are located apical to the gingival margin and below the gumline
why do we perform an intraoral and extraoral exam?
to look for anything abnormal
when do we prefer a biopsy?
unusual lesion that cannot be identified with clinical certainty
any lesion that does not show evidence of healing in a 2 week time period
persistant, white, thick, hypekeratotic lesion and any mass that does not break thru the surface epithelium
whats the purpose of polishing?
To remove extrinsic stains
What is a pigtail explorer used for?
proximal surfaces for calculus, dental caries or margins of restorations
curved tips are applied opposite to tooth surface
ex. 3ML,3CH,2A
what is an orban type explorer used for?
assessment of anterior root surfaces and the facial and lingual surfaces of posterior teeth.. difficult to adapt to the line angles and proximal surfaces of post. teeth..
ex; 17, 20F, TU17
what is an shepherds hook explorer used for?
examining pits and fissures and supragingival smooth surfaces, and margins of restorations and sealants
