Lab questions Flashcards
Whatarethedifferentradiographicopacitiesthatyoucanidentifywithinthe
abdomen?
Soft tissue, fat and air. Outside the abdomen, the mineral opacity of the skeleton can be identified, too.
. Relative to the thorax, is the abdomen a region of naturally high or low
radiographic contrast?
The abdomen is a region of naturally low contrast: this is because unlike the thorax which contains a lot of air, the abdomen contains mostly soft tissue (e.g. liver, kidneys, spleen, urinary bladder…) and fat (sometimes a lot!!!) and the inherent difference in radiographic opacity between soft tissue and fat is not large.
What portions of the liver make up the part of the liver seen in the
cranioventral abdomen on the lateral view? What portion in the liver creates
the opacity immediately cranial to the right kidney?
The right medial and left lateral liver lobes; The caudate lobe of the liver.
Can you identify the following organs? Please comment on the differences in radiographic anatomy of the spleen in dogs versus cats. - Liver - Right Kidney - Left Kidney - Urinary bladder - Stomach: fundus, and pyloric antrum - Cranio-dorsal extremity of the spleen - Caudo-ventral extremity of the spleen
See overlays. In dogs the cranial extremity of the spleen is seen on the VD view in the left cranial abdomen adjacent to the gastric fundus; it is OCCASIONALLY seen on the lateral view on very high contrast images (digital) in the craniodorsal abdomen as well. The caudoventral extremity of the spleen is often times (but not always) seen in the ventral abdomen on the lateral view. In CATS, the ventral extremity of the spleen is normally NOT visible on lateral radiographs; if it is, it indicates splenomegaly.

why can you see the nipples?
The reason why they are so well visible, although they are tiny soft tissue nodules, is because they are OUTSIDE of the abdominal cavity, and therefore surrounded by air. The inherent contrast between air and soft tissue is a lot higher than between fat and soft tissue, which is why these nipples are so well delineated.
