Lab Information Flashcards
beat frequency
-difference between two carrier frequencies (set for an IFC setup)
sweep pattern
- simply modulation of the signal
- sweep refers to frequency
vector scan
- this is an automatic current variation allowing the fields to rotate back & forth between 2 lines of current using 2 channels & 4 electrodes
- creates a bigger treatment area
- circular shape treatment field & offers a dynamic (rotating) field
bipolar IFC
- use of 2 electrodes hooked to a single channel
- interference of 2 sine waves leads to a fixed beat frequency
- creates an oval field of current
quadpolar IFC
- use of 4 electrodes & 2 channels
- interference of sine waves occurs at the tissue level (not at the machine)
- creates “four-leaf clover” treatment field
stereodynamic method
- adding a 3rd channel with 6 electrodes
- enlarged treatment field in 3 dimensions
What should be documented when providing IFC as a treatment for patients?
- purpose
- electrode placement
- patient position
- parameters (waveform, beat frequency, modulation, Rx time, etc.)
- patient response
twitch contraction (ESTIM for motor recruitment lab)
-1-10 ops generally minimum rate to achieve a single muscle twitch
non-fatigue contraction
- 15-100 pps/cps
- 30-35 is a common range
tetany
- summation of contraction
- 100-1000 pps/cps although tetany can begin in the 30-35 ops range
Why would tetany be used therapeutically?
- in a clinical situation where, for example, a needed contraction for a certain amount of time is necessary.
- creating dorsiflexion for a drop foot
What kind of position should the patient be in when utilizing ESTIM for muscle reeducation?
-in an isometric position to begin
iontophoresis
-use of DC electrical current to drive ions of various substances through the skin & into underlying tissues
