Lab: Haematology Flashcards
Provide a brief outline of blood.
Consists of plasma and corpuscles (cells), accounts for 9% bodyweight in cats and dogs, transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products around the body, aids in thermoregulation, immune response and clotting.
What does plasma consist of?
consists of minerals, plasma proteins, waste products, nutrients, antibodies, hormones, and enzymes.
What are the different types of blood cells?
erythrocytes (RBC’s), thrombocytes (platelets), leucocytes (WBC’s).
What are the 5 things that make up leucocytes?
basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes
Define: Erthyrocytosis & Anaemia
Erthyrocytosis - increased NO. of RBC’s.
Anaemia - decreased number of RBC’s/low quantity of haemoglobin
What are the two types of erythrocyte inclusions?
- Howell-jolly bodies
- Heinz bodies
What is the smallest cell type in blood?
Thrombocytes
Define: thrombocytopenia
reduced number of platelets
What are two types of coagulant tests?
Activated clotting time
Buccal mucosal bleed tests
How should a patient be prepped prior to blood tests?
FAST for 8-12hrs (reduces risk of sample being lipaemic).
May require animal to be fed before test (bile acids, liver function).
Rested and stress free for glucose estimation.
What sites can be used to take a blood sample?
Jugular vein, cephalic vein, saphenous vein, marginal ear vein.
What equipment is needed for a blood sample?
clippers/scissors, spirit and cotton wool/skin prep solution, sterile needle and syringe, blood tubes, microscope slides, PPE, IV catheter +/-.
