16
Q

Accessory structures associated with hair follicles that secrete oils are this.

A

Sebaceous glands

17
Q

The layer of epidermal cells characterized by large oval nuclei is this layer.

A

Stratum spinosum

18
Q

Accessory structures active in response to various emotions are this. These are commonly found in the axillary region

A

Apocrine glands

19
Q

The layer of epidermis in which cells appear clear and the cell organelles are no longer visible is this layer

A

Stratum lucidum

20
Q

Microscopic passageways through which processes from osteocytes extended are called this. These passageways allow osteocytes to communicate with each other via specialized gap junctions

A

Canaliculi

21
Q

The plates of bony tissue in cancellous bone tissue are called this. Red bone marrow fills the spaces between these plates.

A

Trabeculae

22
Q

Bone tissue is laid down in concentric rings of tissue called this.

A

Lamellae

23
Q

All of the rings of tissue surrounding one central canal constitute one of these.

A

Osteonic system

24
Q

A layer of dense connective tissue called this covers the surface of bones such as the radius or tibia. This tissue is continuous which the tissue that makes up ligaments

A

Periosteum

25
Q

Endosteum lines this of long bones.

A

Medullary cavity

26
Q

Relatively large blood vessels and nerves are found in passageways called this. Smaller branches from these blood vessels are nerves are found in osteonic canals

A

Perforating canals

27
Q

In both compact and cancellous bone tissue, osteocytes are found in chambers called this.

A

Lacunae

28
Q

The shaft of a long bone is properly called this.

A

Diaphysis

29
Q

While the ends of a long bone are properly called this.

A

Epiphyses

30
Q

How will the healing process proceed for the skin after a compound fracture?

A

Fibroblasts produce new collagen fibers. The majority of the dermis is made up of irregular dense connective tissue so the new collagen replaces the damaged dermal tissue. Cells of the stratum basale will reproduce then replace the damaged epidermis

31
Q

How will the healing process proceed for the bones after a compound fracture?

A

Osteoblasts and new blood vessels invade the hematoma that formed following the break. The osteoblasts deposit cancellous bone and fibroblasts deposit fibrocartilage. The fibrocartilage fills the space between the broken ends of the bone. Osteoblasts invade this space and gradually replace it with compact bone tissue
