I: lateral 1/3 clavicle, acromion process
A: elevation, upward scapular rotation
I: CN XI, C3, C4 nerves
rvs OI: head extension at neck, ipsilateral lateral flexion, contralateral neck rotation
self: laterally flex head towards contralateral shoulder, flex head forward while looking back at ipsilateral shoulder, depress ipsilateral shoulder girdle, can apply pressure w contralateral hand
assisted: depress ipsilateral scapula, cradle head in other hand. flex neck anteriorly and to contralateral side while applying ipsilateral rotation
levator scapulae:
OIAI
rvs OI
self + assisted stretch
O: transverse vertebral processes C1-C4
I: superior angle and superior medial border of scapula
A: scapula elevation and downward rotation
I: dorsal scapular nerve
rvs OI: bilateral-neck extension, ipsilateral - flexion and rotation of neck
self: armpit sniff - rotate head to contralateral corner (of box), flex forward bringing chin to contralateral chest pocket, depress ipsilateral shoulder girdle
assisted: rotate and tuck chin
pectoralis minor:
OIAI
self + assisted stretch
O: ribs 3-5
I: coracoid process
A: depression, protractions, downward rotation of scapula
I: medial pectoral nerve
self: arm at 90 degrees, forearm against wall, retract and body forward
assisted: thenar eminence of hand on coracoid process - downward press to retract scapula, butt of hand on inferior angle of spine of scapula pushing up toward ribcage
rhomboid major:
OII
O: spinal processes T2-T5
I: medial border of scapula between root of spine and inferior angle
I: dorsal scapular nerve
rhomboid minor:
OII
O: spinal processes C7-T2, inferior portion of ligamentum nuchae
I: root of spine of scapula
I: dorsal scapular nerve
middle trapezius:
OII
O: spinous processes of T1-T5
I: acromion, spine of scapula
I: cranial nerve XI, C3-C4
middle trapezius and rhomboids:
action
3rd grade strengthening
a: scapular retraction, downward rotation, downward rotation of scapula
strength: bend forward slightly, retract scapular while bending elbow and bringing up beside torso
lower trapezius:
OIAI
grade 3 strengthening:
O: spinous processes of T6-T12
I: root of spine of scapula
A: depression, upward rotation
I: cranial nerves XI, C3-C4
strength: pull scapula to opposite back pocket - arms in diamond, 4- y
serratus anterior:
OIAI
grade 3 strengthening
O: ribs 1-9
I: anterior, medial border of scapula
A: protraction and upward rotation of scapula
I: long thoracic nerve
strength: lie on back, protract
supraspinatus:
OIAI
grade 3 strength
O: supraspinous fossa of scapula
I: superior facet of greater tubercle of humerus and joint capsule
A: abducts GH joint and stabilizes head of humerus in fossa
I: suprascapular nerve
strength: back against wall, abduct arms to head thumbs point up, externally rotate at GH for full elevation
infraspinatus:
OIAI
O: infraspinous fossa
I: middle facet of greater tubercle of humerus
A: external rotation of arm at shoulder
I: suprascapular nerve
teres minor:
OIAI
O: superior lateral border of scapula
I: inferior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
A: external rotation of arm at shoulder, joint stabilization during motion
I: axillary nerve
infraspinatus and teres minor strength:
elbows flexed at side, externally rotate arms at shoulder
subscapularis
OIAI
strength
O: subscapular fossa of scapula
I: lesser tubercle of humerus
A: internal rotator of GH joints, GH stabilization during movement
I: upper and lower subscapular nerve
strength: elbow flexed at side, internally rotate towards body
deltoid
OIAI
origin and action - anterior vs mid vs posterior fibres
strength:
O:
anterior = lateral 1/3 of clavicle
mid = acromion process
posterior = posterior border of spine of scapula
I: deltoid tuberosity of humerus
A:
anterior = GH flexion, horizontal adduction, internal rotation
mid = GH abduction
posterior = GH extension, horizontal abduction, external rotation
I: axillary nerve
strength: abduct arm
