Sternocleidomastoid
Origin- clavicle and manubrium
Insertion- Mastoid process of the temporal bone
Action- flexes, laterally flexes, and rotates head to opposite side
Trapezius
Origin- occipital protuberance, C7-T12, spinous processes
Insertion- clavicle; acromion process and spine of the scapula
Action-
Upper: extends head or elevates shoulder girdle
Middle: retracts and stabilizes the scapula
Lower: depresses scapula and shoulder girdle
Levator Scapulae
Origin- C1-C4 transverse processes
Insertion- superior angle of the scapula
Action- elevates the scapula
Rhomboid Minor
Origin- C7-T1 spinous processes
Insertion- medial border of the scapula
Action- scapular retraction
Rhomboid Major
Origin- T2-T5 spinous processes
Insertion-medial border of the scapula
Action-scapular retraction
Pectoralis Minor
Origin- ribs 3-5
Insertion- coracoid process of the scapula
Action- depresses the scapula; elevates ribs 3-5
Serratus Anterior
Origin- ribs 1-8
Insertion- inferior angle and medial border of the scapula
Action- scapular protraction
Latissimus Dorsi
Origin- T7 spinous process through sacrum
Insertion- Intertubercular groove of humerus
Action- Adducts, extends and medially rotates the shoulder
Teres Major
Origin- Axillary(lateral) border of scapula
Insertion- Intertubercular groove of humerus
Action- extends shoulder
Pectoralis Major
Origin- Clavicle; sternum; true ribs
Insertion- Intertubercular groove of humerus
Action- shoulder medial rotation and adduction
Deltoid
Origin- clavicle; acromion process; spine of the scapula
Insertion- deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
Action- abducts the shoulder
Supraspinatus
Origin- Supraspinous fossa of scapula
Insertion- greater tubercle of humerus
Action- abducts shoulder
Infraspinatus
Origin- infraspinous fossa of scapula
Insertion- greater tubercle of humerus
Action- laterally rotates the shoulder
Teres Minor
Origin- lateral border of the scapula
Insertion- greater tubercle of the humerus
Action- laterally rotates the shoulder
Subscapularis
Origin- subscapular fossa of the scapula
Insertion- lesser tubercle of humerus
Action- medially rotates shoulder
