Proximal
Toward an attached base

Distal
Away from an attached base
“ the fingers are distal to the wrist”
Ventral
The front ( the belly side) "the navel is on the ventral side of the trunk
Dorsal
The back; behind
“the scapula is located posterior to the rib cage”
Lateral
Away from the midline
Medial
Toward the midline
Superficial
At, near, or relatively close to the body surface
“the skin is superficial to underlying structures”
Deep
Toward the interior of the body; farther from the surface
“The bone of the thigh is deep to the surrounding skeletal muscles”
Cranial
Toward the head
“the cranial border of the pelvis is superior to the thigh”
Caudal
Toward the tail (coccyx)
“the hips are caudal to the waist”
Tuberosity
Projection: large rounded projection of bone, may be roughened
Crest
Projection: Narrow ridge of bone, usually prominent
Trochanter
Projection: Very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process (the only examples are on the femur)
Line
Projection: narrow ridge of bone, less prominent than a crest
Tubercle
Projection: small rounded projection or process
