LAB EXAM 1 Flashcards
Fomite
an inanimate object capable of transmission of a disease causing organism, or toxin, or chemical.
growth medium
a laboratory preparation that contains nutrients that are appropriate for growing microorganisms.
Categories of media growth
Chemical, function, physical state
Defined Media
We know the exact formula of the chemicals that are added to make the media
Defined Media Examples
Glucose Salts Medium
Complex Media
There is at least one ingredient in the media whose exact chemical formula is not known eg extracts of plants or animals, peptone, blood
Complex Media Example
Tryptic Soy broth
General purpose media
has general nutrients for almost all organisms to grow.
Nutrient agar
General purpose media - it supports growth of a wide range of non-fastidious organisms. It can grow a variety of types of bacteria and fungi, and contains many nutrients needed for the bacterial growth.
Enriched media
Has additional nutrients to allow growth of certain organisms
Enriched Media Sample
Blood Agar – has added sheep’s blood that promotes growth of microbes that need extra added nutrients to grow ( fastidious microbes)
