Lab Equipments Flashcards
What are the 5 components of adaptive therapeutic exercise? (list them in order)
- Flexibility and ROM
- Muscuslar strength and endurance
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Balance and Proprioception
- Functional motor skills (FMS) - Fine motor skills and gross motor skills
What is the purpose of flexibility and ROM?
Improve ROM
What is the purpose of muscular strength and endurance?
Increase EFFECIANCY in performing ADLs
What is the purpose of cardiovascualar endurance?
Increase resistance to fatigue
What is the purpose of balance and proprioception?
Reduce fall risk
What is the purpose of funtional motor skills (FMS)?
To increase INDEPENDANCE in performing ADLs
(a) What type of resistance are machine that ends in “-tron”
(b) What are hydraulic machines and give an example?
(c) What are the resistance in typical strength machines? In other words, what is the easiest and hardest between 1-10
(d) How many sets and reps should you typically do with strength equipements?
(a) Resistance is backwards (0 = harder, 10 = easier)
(b) Have resistance going in each direction (EX: Total machine)
(c) 1= easier, 10 = harder
(d) 1-3 sets , 8-12 reps
Identify the component(s), goal (if applicable), and briefly describe how to use the following equipment:
Total machine
- Component: Muscular strength and endurance
- 1-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions
- 1 = easy , 6 = hard
- 8 Exercises performed:
1) Shoulder flexion and extension
2) Shoulder horizontal flexion and extension
3) Trunk flexion and extension
4) Knee flexion and extension
Identify the component(s), goal (if applicable), and briefly describe how to use the following equipment:
Uppertone
- Accessible for those in wheelchairs (make sure it’s on brake prior to exercise)
- Adjust machine to appropriate height
- Adjust resistance/weight and its placement
- 8 Exercises performed:
1) Chest press
2) Rows
3) Triceps extension
4) Rickshaw
5) Lateral raises
6) Lateral pull-downs
7) Bicep curls
8) Shoulder external rotation
What can you use/do to monitor clients while using cardiovascualr equipments?
Use HR, RPE (6-20), or facial expressions/talk test to monitor clients
How long can a client exercise on cardiovascular equipments?
No longer than 15 minutes
What is the heart rate protocol at the center?
i. Before exercise (Resting HR)
ii. Immediately after exercise (Working HR)
iii. One minute after the completion of exercise (Recovery HR)
- Recovers quickly = more challenge
- Recovers slowly = need less of a challenge
Identify the component(s), goal (if applicable), and briefly describe how to use the following equipment:
Arm ergometer
- Component: Cardiovascular endurance
- How to use: Change the height of the machine by aligning the axis of rotation on the machine to the client’s shoulder, and the client should have a slight bend at full extension.
Identify the component(s), goal (if applicable), and briefly describe how to use the following equipment:
Motomed
- Component: Cardiovascular endurance
- How to use: Change the height of the machine by aligning the axis of rotation on the machine to the client’s shoulder, and the client should have a slight bend at full extension.
Identify the component(s), goal (if applicable), and briefly describe how to use the following equipment:
Nu-step
- Component: Cardiovascular endurance
- How to use: Make sure the client’s legs have a slight bend at full extension and the same for arms. Use leg stabilizers if needed. Make sure client does full ROM
