Lab Equipment Flashcards
Safety Goggles
Glasses used to protect your eyes in the lab
Beaker
A beaker is a common container in most labs, most have spouts on their rims to aid in pouring, also have lips around their rims and markings to measure volume that they contain.
Not always very accurate but they come in a wide variety of shape and size.
Graduated Cylinder
Several markings up and down the cylinder for measuring, come in many sizes, have a spout and a larger flat bottom. The smaller they are in diameter the more specific the volume measurements are.
Test tube, Test tube rack and test tube tongs
Glass tube with on open end and the other closed, closed end is rounded. Easily capped with a glass or rubber stopper.
Crucible tongs
Forceps
Tongs are specially made to hold beakers some, and for holding things to hot to touch or corrosive, etc.
Used to grab small things like solid chemicals
Thermometer
Used to measure temperature, made of glass.
Bunsen Burner
Is a mechanical apparatus that is connected to a flammable gas source, there is a knob to adjust the amount of gas flow and a rotating collar that controls airflow.
These both must be adjusted to get an ideal flame for heating purposes. Lit with flint or a match
Utmost safety
Erlenmeyer Flask
Also known as a conical flask , named after the inventor in 1861
Has a narrow neck and expands towards its base, easy mixing and swirling
Can be capped with a glass or rubber stopper
Can be easily clamped to a ring stand as well and heated or shaken mechanically
Marks on the side tor estimation
Glass Stoppered Buret
Buret Clamp
Is a glass tube thats open at the top and comes to a narrow pointed opening at the bottom. Right above the bottom opening is a stopcock that can be turned to control the amount of liquid being released.
There are markings along the length of the tube that indicates the volume of liquid present
Volumetric Flask
Is a round flask with a long neck and a flare bottom, its used to measure an exact volume of liquid, there is a small line on the neck that indicates how high to fill the bottle, comes with a special cap that wont let anything in or out
Piper Measuring
There are a large variety of pipettes designed to accomplish specific goals, all for measuring
Dropper Pipet
There are small glass tubes with narrow tips on one end and a rubber bulb on the other, they suck up liquid that can than be squeezed out in small drops
Balances
Weights
Spatula
Spatulas and scoopulas are for scooping solid chemicals
Ring Stands, rings, and clamps
Metal stand, iron ring, and wire gauze
