Lab Equipment Flashcards
Erlenmeyer flask
Used to hold/mix liquids, wider at bottom
for even heating
• can be stoppered to prevent evaporation
– Never used to measure exact volumes
Bunsen Burner
A Bunsen burner is a device used in
scientific laboratories for heating,
sterilization, and many other uses.
Braided hose
Connects bunsen burner to gas
Flint Striker
Creates spark to safely light bunsen burner
Graduated cylinder
measures volumes in a quantitative manner.
• The cylinder is far more exact than a beaker or Erlenmeyer flask
– NEVER measure volumes with anything else except a graduated cylinder
Test tube
holds and test various reactions on a small scale
• They are designed to allow easy heating
of samples, to be held in a flame, at a
45o angle
– They are made of special heat-resistant
glass called Pyrex. Only Pyrex glass can be used in flames because plain glass will crack.
Disposable pipette
Both dispense a small volume of liquid.
– Volumes dispensed is never exact
– Pipettes are usually disposed of after use
Titration Burette
Burettes are used in a volumetric analysis.
• Burettes dispense an EXACT volume of liquid often in an acid/base procedure called a “titration”
• titrations are used to calculate the acidity of a solution
Burette clamp
holds a burette during titration
can hold one or two burettes
Beaker
A beaker is a cylindrical cup with a notch on the top to allow the pouring of liquids.
– Made of Pyrex, come in many sizes
• Used for mixing & heating of chemicals
– NEVER to measure volumes.
– They are relatively inaccurate
– Offer approximate volumes only
Test Tube Brush or Beaker Brush
Used to clean test tubes &
beakers
– The brush fits neatly inside them,
allows scrubbing using a twisting
motion
Test tube holder
To hold and transport test tubes
– Place about 2/3 up the test tube toward the mouth
Crucible
– A crucible is a porcelain cup-shaped piece of laboratory equipment used when heating small crystal compounds to very high temperatures (to dehydrate them).
Crucible tongs
– Initially designed to safely holds a crucible but it is the GO TO to pick up other small lab objects which may require heating or picking up during a lab.
Mortar and pestle
Grinds crystalline solids into
fine powder
Iron Ring
Gets clamped to a ring stand and
serves as support to heat lab
apparatus upon
– Use 2 rings to protect against
spills with a beaker when heating
Ring Stand
Support for iron ring and other lab
apparatus
– Many things clamp onto a ring
stand.
Utility clamp
Clamp it to a ring stand
to hold test tubes and
flasks (& other items)
during experiments.
wire mesh (gauze)
Sits upon the ring, under a beaker
– It evenly distributes heat from a Bunsen burner so it is not concentrated in one spot when heating burning your samples
Clay triangle
Lays up the iron ring, supports a crucible while heating
Can also be used during funnel filtration to support the funnel
Evaporating dish
A porcelain dish used to heat solutions ie. Salt water to recover salt
• Only used evaporate relatively SMALL VOLUMES of solutions
Watch glass
small concave circular piece of glass.
• Used on top of an evaporating dish to “watch” your solution evaporate and will also to prevent splattering
Stir rods
Stir rods are long cylinders made of glass.
– Used to carefully & gently mix solutions in a circular motion
Thermometer
Used to measure temperature
– We only use the Celsius scale
- not used to stir
