Lab Equipment Flashcards
Balance
The only piece of equipment we us to precisely measure the mass of a substance
Beaker
Large mouth glass containers used to contain approximate volumes of liquid
Buret
Long tube with a stopcock that opens and closes. It is used to deliver volumes of solutions, especially in an acid/base titration. They count backwards because they measure how much liquid has been delivered
Erlenmeyer Flask
Small mouth glass container used to contain approximate volumes of liqiud. The small mouth accommodates a stopper for storage or to prevent spillage while mixing
Graduated Cylinder
Used to measure and deliver precise volumes of liquids
Test Tube
Glass cylinder that contains liquids being tested in an experiment. Doesn’t have any measurement markings on it.
Volumetric Flask
Used to precisely make a specific volume of an aqueous solution (aqueous = water + dissolved compound)
Pipet
Deliver precise volume
Beaker Tongs
Circular tongs with rubber coating that can wrap around and hold a hot beaker
Bunsen Burner
Gas flame burner that uses methane as a fuel source
Clay Triangle
Set on a ring clamp, it is used to support a crucible or a funnel
Crucible
Ceramic bowl lid that is used to heat small amounts of solid substances to high temperatures
Crucible Tongs
Used to pick up and hold small items, such as crucibles
Double Buret Tongs
Attaches to ring stand to hold two burets
Evaporating Dish
Used to contain small volumes of solutions in order to heat the mixture and evaporate the solvent
