Lab Document: IV Therapy Flashcards
accidental leakage of non-vesicant
solutions, such as antibiotics, dextrose solutions, or saline, out of a vein into surrounding tissue
Infiltration
Inflammation (redness, swelling, pain, and heat) of a vein, usually in the legs.
Can lead to formation of Deep Vein Thrombosis
Phlebitis
A pool of mostly clotted blood that forms in an organ, tissue, or body space.
Caused by a broken blood vessel that was damaged by surgery or an injury
Hematoma
Venous spasm is a vein contracting as a protective mechanism. It can occur during minor procedures like inserting a peripheral IV (PIV) or placing an arterial line. Other causes include:
Cold IV fluids
Drug-related irritation
Trauma to the vein during insertion
Instrumentation of large vessel veins
