Why give PRBC (packed red blood cells)
Which labs / values
Hemoglobin (Hbg) <7 Emergency
8 - 11 report to HPC
Hemacrit >30%
Shock happens when there is too little blood in the system.

Which treatment do you anticipate
PRBC Packed Red Blood Cells
Patient has
Hgb 8g/dL
Hct 35%
After infusion of 1 unit PRBC
What do you expect the findings to be
9 Hgb
38% Hct
Platelets
<150,000 =
<50,000 =
<150,000 = Thrombocytopenia
<50,000 = Deadly
Low platelets from these 2 diseases
Cancer
Anemia
FFP Fresh Frozen Plasma
Does what
Which 2 diseases are associated with lack of clotting factors
It’s the “Glue” that sticks platelets together
Hemophilia & Liver failure
Transfusion Reactions
Priority interventions
1.
2.
3.
4. Assess, What are we assessing for?
- Stop or slow infusion
- Using new tubing 0.9% sodium chloride
- Report to HCP
- Assess, Vital Signs, Urine Sample (hemolyzed RBC)
Hemolyzed RBC means what?
What is the serious side effect?
Hemolyzed = broke
Hyperkalemia >5 (Peaked T Waves on ECG)
Ordered Response to Reaction to Blood Transfusion
(6)
- Stop transfusion
- Hang new IV infusion set
- Start 0.9% NaCl
- Call HCP
- Assess BP,HR,RR
- Obtain blood and urine specimens
