Lab: Contamination Flashcards
Scientific Method:
- Make an observation
- Ask a question
- Form a hypothesis (testable explanation)
- Make a prediction based on hypothesis
- Test the prediction
- Analyze results (was your hypothesis true?)
Scientific method:
- Controlled groups
- Experimental groups
- Controlled groups: is the group in the experiment or study that does not receive treatment by the research
- Experimental groups: is the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested
Agar Plate/Petri Dish:
Is used to provide a growth medium using a mix of agar and other nutrients which micro organisms including bacteria and fungi can be cultured and observed under the microscope
Sabouraud Agar:
Is a type of agar growth media containing peptones
Nutrient Agar:
Is a general purpose nutrient medium used for the cultivation of microbes supporting growth of a wide range.
It is popular because it can grow a variety of types of bacteria and fungi and contains many nutrients needed for bacterial growth.
Enriched Agar: (Media)
Contains the nutrients required to support the growth of a wide variety of organisms
Define Contamination:
To make something dangerous, dirty, or impure by adding something harmful or undesirable to it.
Define colony:
What is it?
When a bacterium is deposited and nutrients are given in order for the bacteria to grow it will begin to multiply, the clones (multiplication) of the bacterium is called a colony.
What is aseptic technique?
Aseptic technique is the proper steps followed in order to prevent contamination of the microorganisms.
It is a standard practice in all medical and laboratory procedures.
What is nosocomial infection?
A nosocomial infection is an infection that a patient can get out a hospital or other healthcare facilities.
The patient is infected by an infection that he or she was not originally being seen for.
An example would be MRI say it infects open wounds and is hard to treat
Define HAI:
HAI: hospital acquired infection
It is also known as nosocomial infection.
How does aseptic technique relate to the role of healthcare providers in the hospital or other healthcare setting?
It is needed in any healthcare setting because it is a strict procedure that needs to be followed in order to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.
Proper procedure for sterile environments.
Nurses and doctors need to take caution so they do not transfer bacteria’s from patient to patient.
