Lab Chapter 7: Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Support Cells
cells that provide physical and metabolic support to the neurons
Neuron
the structural and functional unit of the nervous system
Unipolar neurons
cells that have a single, very short process that divides into a central and a peripheral process
Sensory neurons
unipolar neurons that conduct sensory information from the periphery to the CNS
Bipolar neurons
cells that have two processes, one axon and one dendrite
Multipolar neurons
cells that contain multiple processes that consist of a single axon and many dendrites; most plentiful type of neuron
Motor neurons
multipolar neurons that conduct information pertaining to motor skills from the CNS to areas of the PNS
Endoneurium
a layer of connective tissue that covers the axon of each neuron
Myelin Sheath
A layer of insulation on axons that greatly increases the velocity of signal transmission
Neurolemmocyte (Schwann Cell)
Specialized type of support cell that surrounds axons in the PNS and contains myelin
Node of Ranvier (Myelin Sheath Gap)
the space between adjacent neurolemmocytes
Dorsal Root Ganglia
dark, pink-staining structures located on either side of the spinal cord; contain nerve cell bodies of unipolar neurons
