Lab Apparatus Flashcards
A cylindrical tube of clear glass. Used to hold, mix chemicals, also to heat chemicals.
Test tube
Can be used to hold solid and liquid, shows approximate volumes, and may be heated
Beaker
Commonly used due to its relative resistance to heat
Glass
Porcelain dish used to hold a solution whose solvent is being dried and separated from the solvent by evaporation
Evaporating dish
It is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion in a laboratory.
Alcohol lamp
Alcohol lamp uses _______ as a fuel.
Ethy alcohol or spirit
A metal heating device connected to a gas outlet with rubber tubings used to heat chemicals in beakers or test tubes.
Has adjustable airhole allowing control of temperature.
Bunsen burner
Used for the determination of the mass of a body under gravitation.
Used for high precision measurements like masses up to 260g.
Beam balance
Made of glass, used to stir or mix combinations of chemicals.
Stirring rod
Marked with ml scale and is used to measure volume.
Graduated cylinder
a titration flask which features a flat bottom. Used to hold liquids when carrying out reactions and preparing solutions. Also for microbial cultures.
Erlenmeyer flask
laboratory apparatus used to measure the volume of a liquid or a gas. To accurately measure and dispense liquid. Its a long glass tube that has markings on it for measurement.
Acid/alkali burette
To transfer small quantities of liquid.
Medicine dropper
Metal rod that is upright and sits on a heavy base, used as support for many uses.
Iron stand
Used to fasten the iron stand as a support for an apparatus.
Iron ring
Metal utility tongs used for hot crucibles
Crucible tongs
Measuring tools that measures 1 meter and is used to measure objects in meters and centimeters
Meter stick
Used as a beaker cover or for evaporating very small amounts of liquid
Watch glass
Used to incubate samples at a constant temperature over a long period of time.
Water bath
Is a preferred heat source for resting flammable chemicals instead of an open flame to prevent ignition.
Water bath
Used to determine temperature
Thermometer
Triangular wire frame with clay coverings
Used to support crucible
Clay triangle
Used to cap the openings of glassware such as test tubes or erlenmeyer flasks.
Cork
Used to store chemicals in liquid or powder form.
Reagent bottle
Used to hold a filter paper and can be used for pouring to avoid spills.
Funnel
A piece of laboratory apparatus used for collecting water.
Water trough
Made of metal, has a clamp with a spring handle.
Used to hold a test tube
Test tube holder
For holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter.
Test tube rack
Used to heat small amounts of solid substances that are being heated strongly at high temperatures.
Crucible with cover
has a round body, a long neck, and often a flat bottom. Used to hold liquids when carrying out reactions.
Florence flask
Used when mixing accurate concentrations of solutions
Has a volume marking which is very exact and can be stoppered.
Volumetric flask
Why most laboratory apparatus are made of glass?
Glass is easy to clean, it is a transparent material and we can see through it clearly. Glass does not react to most of the chemicals used in experiments.
It withstands high temperatures.
