Lab 9 Flashcards
What is the action of the Biceps brachii muscle? (muscles that move the forearm)
flexes and supinates forearm, weakly flexes arm
What is the action of the Triceps brachii muscle? (muscles that move the forearm)
extends forearm, long head assists with adduction of arm
What is the action of the Brachioradialis muscle? (muscles that move the forearm)
flexes forearm (most effective when forearm is partially flexed and semi-pronated)
What is the action of the Pronator teres muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
pronates forearm; weakly flexes forearm
What is the action, origin, and insertion of the Flexor carpi radialis muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
Action = flexes and abducts hand
Origin = medial epicondyle of humerus
Insertion = base of 2nd and 3rd metacarpals
What is the action of the Flexor digitorum superficialis muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
flexes hand and middle phalanges 2-5
What is the action of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
flexes and adducts hand
What is the action of the Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
extends and abducts hand
What is the action of the Extensor Digitorum muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
extends fingers and hand, abducts fingers
What is the action of the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
extends and adducts hand
What is the action of the supinator muscle? (muscles that move the Wrist, Hand, and Fingers)
supinates forearm
What is the action of the latissimus dorsi muscle? (muscles that move the arm aka axial muscles)
extend, adduct, and medially rotate humerus; draw shoulder inferiorly
What is the action, origin, and insertion of the pectoralis major muscle? (muscles that move the arm aka axial muscles)
Action = adducts and medially rotates arm
Origin = sternal end of clavicle, sternum, costal cartilages 1-6/7
Insertion = intertubercular sulcus and greater tubercle of humerus
What is the action, origin, and insertion of the deltoid muscle? (muscles that move the humerus)
Action = abducts arm, anterior fibers alone flex and medial rotate, posterior fibers alone extend and laterally rotate.
Origin = Actomial end of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Insertion = deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
What is the action of the Supraspinatus muscle? (rotator cuff) (muscles that move the humerus)
abducts arms, resists downward displacement of humerus when carrying heavy objects
What is the action of the Infraspinatus muscle? (rotator cuff) (muscles that move the humerus)
laterally rotates arm, helps to stabilize the shoulder joint
What is the action of the Subscapularis muscle? (rotator cuff) (muscles that move the humerus)
Rotates arm medially, helps to stabilize the shoulder joint
What is the action of the teres major muscle? (muscles that move the humerus)
extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm
What is the action of the teres minor muscle? (rotator cuff) (muscles that move the humerus)
laterally rotates arm, helps to stabilize the shoulder joint
What is the action of the Pectoralis minor muscle? (muscles of the Anterior Pectoral Girdle)
with ribs fixed, draws scapula forward and downward, or with scapula fixed, elevated ribs during forced inspiration
What is the action of the Serratus anterior muscle? (muscles of the Anterior Pectoral Girdle)
rotates scapula so its inferior angle moves laterally and upward
What is the action, origin, and insertion of the Trapezius muscle? (muscles of the Posterior Pectoral Girdle)
Action = superior region: elevates scapula
Middle region: adducts scapula
Inferior region: depresses scapula
Origin = occipital bone, spinous process of C7 and thoracic vertebrae
Insertion = clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
What is the action of the Levator scapulae muscle? (muscles of the Posterior Pectoral Girdle)
elevates, adducts scapula and slight downward rotation, laterally flexes neck to same side when scapula is fixed
What is the action of the Rhomboid major muscle? (muscles of the Posterior Pectoral Girdle)
retract (adduct) scapula and slight downward rotation
