Lab 8 - Recrystallization of Crude Aspirin(Acetylsalicylic acid) Flashcards
1
Q
Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid) Synthesis
A
The hydroxyl group of salicylic acid reacts with acetic anhydride in the presence of H2SO4 to yield aspirin.
2
Q
Aspirin
A
Aspirin is an effective analgesic (pain reliever), antipyretic (fever reducer) and anti-inflammatory agent.
3
Q
Recrystallization
A
primary technique of purifying solid organic compounds from impurities.
4
Q
Steps involved in recrystallization process:
A
- Selection of suitable solvent for recrystallization of crude organic compound.
- Determination of minimum volume of solvent required to dissolve crude compound.
- Dissolving the impure (crude) compound in suitable solvent at or near the boiling point of solvent.
- Filtration of hot solution for removal of impurities (Optional, depends on type of impurities present, performed in case of insoluble or colored impurities).
- Cooling of solution on ice bath to obtain crystals of pure compound.
- Filtration (optional), washing and collection of crystals.
- Drying of crystals in hot air oven.
- Determination of % purity and performing chemical test to determine purity of crystals.
