Lab 8 - Pump Characterization Flashcards
Fluid machines are separated into two categories:
positive displacement machines and
turbomachines
Positive displacement machines
operate by forcing fluid into or out of a
chamber.
Turbomachines
involve the flow of a fluid through rotating blades or rotors that either remove (turbines) or add (pumps) energy to the fluid
How is pump applicability determined?
with a Pump Performance Curve. Performance Curves are specific to an
individual pump and are determined through experimentation.
What is the purpose of the pump characterization lab?
The purpose of this exercise is to study the operation of a centrifugal pump and determine the performance curve for a centrifugal pump operating at variable speeds.
What is the change in pressure mainly attributed to in Lab 8?
the rotary action(pressure increases outward) produces by the rotating impeller.
What does a homologous series refer to?
a class of pumps that have the same shape (i.e. are geometrically similar)
The power usage is monitored at the plug with a…?
Kill-A-Watt meter
How is the pressure at the outflow measured?
a Bourdon type pressure gauge mounted on the panel of the hydraulics bench.
What is the diameter of the outflow pipe
2.5 cm
How is flow measured? (also for Lab 2)
Flow is measured with the sharp-crested v-notch weir at the end of the weir channel (L/min) and with the volumetric discharge tank and stopwatch (L/s).
Where is the pressure tapping point?
18.5 cm above the bottom of the pump.
